Breath Exercise

BREATH SUPPORT: Breath, opening the mouth in the shape of “ah”.  Imagine yawning as you inhale.  This opens wide the vocal folds and the throat to remove the resistance of airflow into the lungs.  It also relaxes and lowers the larynx. Push out air through an imaginary coffee straw for 12 counts.  After count 12, relax all support muscles and begin the process again. Keep shoulders relaxed and chest expanded.  Only the muscles in the abdominal area should relax as you inhale and slowly increase inward as you push air out (exhale).

Lip Trill Exercise

LIP TRILLS:  Relax as you inhale through an “ah” breath.  Shape “fish lips” and trill the lips as you sing the first 5 notes of a scale moving up in half-steps.  Keep lips relaxed and maintain steady airflow.  If the nose tickles, putting a finger on the end of the nose will help.
