Choir Course Descriptions

At TAFA, we want to give students of all abilities confidence in using their voice. We believe that EVERYONE can sing and especially love to give students the tools to overcome the typical voice cracks, sudden pitch drop, air-spewing tone and insecurities that are so common in pre-teen & teenage voices. We have different levels to train students of varying ages & abilities and are sure to challenge the amazing songbird who would prefer to create their own part as well. It can be confusing to know which choir your child is ready for, so please carefully read the course descriptions below.

ELEMENTARY LEVEL CHOIRS (9-13)

Elementary Singers A 9-11 1:05-2:00  Monday

Elementary Singers B 9-11 9:30-10:25 Tuesday

Course Description: (Level 1-2) Elementary Singers is a beginning choral ensemble for children ages 9-11. Students need no prior music or vocal training, and no audition is required. Elementary Singers provides a fun environment for each child to develop his God-given instrument, the voice, and to sharpen the necessary skills to belong to a musical ensemble. Musicianship, diction, introduction to solfege, and music literacy are all components of the Elementary Singers experience. Additional Supplies & Costs: 3-ring binder, pencils. TAFA provides all music.

Tuition Commitment: One Semester

Con Spirito A 10-13  2:10-3:05 Monday

Course Description: (Level 3) Con Spirito is an advanced mixed choral ensemble for children ages 10-13. Students are chosen for Con Spirito with an audition during the Spring Semester of the previous year. Con Spirito Choir provides a more challenging environment for each child to develop his God-given instrument, the voice, and to refine the necessary skills to belong to a musical ensemble. Musicianship, diction, mastery of solfege, music literacy, and singing in 2 and 3 parts are all components of the Con Spirito experience. Additional Supplies & Costs: 3-ring binder, pencils, choir uniform ($35 estimate). TAFA provides all music. Pre-Requisite or Teacher Approval: Students are admitted to Con Spirito by audition only. Auditions are held in the spring prior to the academic year for current TAFA students. SECONDARY CHOIRS (12-18)

Vocal Techniques A 12-18 10:30-12:00 Tuesday

Course Description (Level 1) THIS IS THE FIRST CLASS TO TAKE FOR 12-18 CHOIRS that will allow the student to enroll in Musical Theater or advance to Chorale, Treble, Chamber or Jazz.

Vocal Techniques is a class where students learn the basics of music including sight-reading, theory, and proper vocal technique. Students will learn Kodaly hand signs in sight-reading, proper singing posture, correct vowel formation, performance etiquette, choral intonation, and how to blend as a group, as well as work on aural and rhythmic skills necessary to a good singer. Vocal Techniques students will spend part of class time singing combined with the other TAFA choirs and will perform with the combined choirs at the end of the semester as a requirement of this class. Students will take a vocal evaluation at the end of the semester. Once passed, they may advance to Chorale (no audition required) or audition for Treble, Chamber or Jazz Choir.

Additional Supplies & Costs: Pencil pouch, 3 mechanical pencils, colored (red, blue, & green) pencils, and 1” BLACK 3-ring folder/binder. Choir music and workbooks will be provided by TAFA.

Pre-Requisite or Teacher Approval: There are no pre-requisites for this class.

Tuition Commitment- One Semester

Chorale A  12-18 10:30-12:00   Tuesday

Course Description: (Level 2)Graded Course. Admission by approval. Open to singers/musicians, ages 12-18. Focus is on excellence that brings God glory and inspires people. Training in sight-reading, solfege, Kodaly hand signs, score marking, proper vocal technique, breathing, and musical training. Music is 3-4 parts (SATB) in various languages and genres. Students are required to turn in practice cards and perform in a semester showcase. Chorale will combine with Chamber & Vocal Techniques for part of their class time to prepare a combined song for the showcase. Additional Supplies & Costs:Black folder, mechanical & colored pencils, choir uniform ($35.00 estimate). TAFA provides all music.

Pre-Requisite or Teacher Approval:Teacher Approval – Admission by recommendation after completing a minimum of 1 semester of Vocal Techniques OR a student may be recommended by Mrs. Schenck, Mrs. Hames, or Mrs. Shannon. All students must pass the written Vocal Evaluation by 90% before being permitted to register for this class, whether they take Vocal Techniques or not. Tuition Commitment – Two Semesters, Fall & Spring

Tapestry Treble Choir-A  13-18 9:00-10:25 Tuesday

Course Description (Level 2+)Graded Course. Admission by Audition. Treble Choir for girls, ages 13-18. Focus is on excellence that brings God glory and inspires people. Advanced singers/musicians. Training in advance sight-reading, solfege, Kodaly hand signs, score marking, proper vocal technique, breathing, and theory. Music is 3-4 parts (SSA or SSAA) in various languages and genres. Students are required to turn in practice cards and sing in evaluations for class grades. This ensemble performs in semester concerts, community events, and TPSMEA contests.

Additional Supplies & Costs: Black folder, mechanical & colored pencils, choir uniform (estimate $35.00). TAFA provides all music.

Pre-Requisite or Teacher Approval:Admission by evaluation after completing Vocal Techniques for at least 1 semester and pass the Choral Evaluation by 90%. It is preferable for students to have at least 1 semester of Chorale or 1 year of Con Spirito before auditioning for Tapestry Treble Choir. Tuition Commitment: Two Semesters – Fall & Spring

Chamber Choir – A 14-18  10:30-12:30 Tuesday

Course Description: (Level 3)Graded Course. Admission by Audition for skilled singers, ages 14-18. Focus is on excellence that brings God glory and inspires people. Students will train in advance sight-reading, solfege, Kodaly hand signs, score marking, proper vocal technique, breathing and music theory/ear-training. Music is 4 or more parts (SSAATTBB) in various languages and genres. Students will be required to turn in practice cards and sing quartet evaluations for class grades. This ensemble is a performance ensemble and will perform in semester concerts, class trips, and TPSMEA contests. Part of class time will combine with Chorale & Vocal Techniques to prepare a combined song for Showcase.

Additional Supplies & Costs:Black folder, mechanical & colored pencils, choir uniform ($35.00 estimate). TAFA provides all music.

Pre-Requisite or Teacher Approval:Students must first complete Vocal Techniques and pass the Choral Evaluation by 90%. It is preferable for a student to have at least 1 year of Chorale or Tapestry Treble Choir before auditioning for Chamber Choir.

Tuition Commitment: Two Semesters – Fall & Spring

Jazz Vocal Ensemble-A 14-18 3:00-5:00 Tuesday

Course Description (Level 4):Graded Course. Admission by audition for skilled solo vocalists, ages 14-18. Focus is on excellence that brings God glory and inspires people. Students must be dedicated to practice outside of class and attend rehearsals knowing their part. The singer must have a strong ear to harmonize, show improvisation flexibility in the voice and advance sight-reading skills. Music is 5 or more parts (SSAATTBB). Students sing solos often in class. Literature is contrasting between contemporary jazz arrangements, worship songs, ballads, and show tunes. Music is often a cappella or accompanied by the jazz band or a small jazz combo. Students will be required to turn in practice cards and sing in solo evaluations for class grades. This ensemble is a performance ensemble and will perform in 1-2 community events per year. Great opportunity for jazz piano accompanying and for students to also play in a jazz combo.

Additional Supplies & Costs:Black folder, mechanical & colored pencils, choir uniform ($35.00 estimate). TAFA provides all music.

Pre-Requisite or Teacher Approval:Students must first complete a year of dedicated participation in any of the secondary choirs at TAFA.
